Production Process
PRE-PRODUCTION

Hello! Our first meeting ...

After initial contact, we will schedule a first meeting to discuss your project goals and timeline. We will coordinate proposals, scheduling, meetings, and budget. During phases 1-5 (below), we evaluate the project for possible roadblocks in production and work with you to minimize them.

Our goal in the pre-production stage is to develop an organized framework so we can efficiently deliver your project.
1
Project Needs & Research

At the outset, we work closely with you to discover the scientific as well aesthetic needs of your project. As needed, we provide supporting research for your project and lay the foundation for your scientific visualization
2
Review & Production Proposal

Next, we review the project proposal with you and assess the production timeline
3
Outline

To commence conceptual work on your project narrative, we work with you to create an outline of ideas that connect with your intended audience
4
Storyboard

Next, we create a storyboard (and optional voiceover script) and work together on encapsulating the molecular characters, cinematic composition, and recurring theme(s) of your narrative, to arrive at an effective evolution of your story and message(s)
5
Animatic

Before production begins, we may create a run-time animatic whose function is to provide a better feel for the course and timing of the final movie (when suitable, we match the approved storyboard frames and script)
REVIEWS

With reviews at the storyboard, style-development, and animatic stages, our process is formulated to freeze content and design decisions step-by-step, to ensure efficiency and minimize unplanned labor-intensive changes. Part of the process are one to two runs of feedback at each stage.

Our ultimate goal is to deliver high-quality work, on time and on budget.
6
Modeling, Texturing & Lighting!

We use programming workflows, professional 3D modeling & movie production and other specialized software to create molecular models (and if suitable, organic environments) that transform concepts in the storyboard, key ideas and scientific information, into 3D visuals.

Your project will be created by skilled staff with Ph.D. qualifications.

Protein Data Bank (PDB), Electron Microscopy Data Bank (EMDB), and other databases for drugs, proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrate and lipid species, and other molecules, will be used to help recreate molecular constructs and system landscapes that are as detailed as possible or suitable for your project.

We then texture, light, and orient your models in cinematic, digital environments.
7
Style-Development Sheets

Style-sheets with still images of models in their digital sets are then created. They are used to show composition, textures, and colors of key frames from the storyboard, with actors as they will appear in the movie.
8
Your Movie

We give life to your models and concepts, during this most labor-intensive phase.

During this phase, a full-draft movie is created for your review. It aims to be close to final and will typically not undergo changes that dramatically deviate from the storyboard or style-sheets.
POST-PRODUCTION

After final compositing and editing, we deliver the final movie at full resolution and suitable codecs.

All revisions have been made and your movie is ready for use in:

  • group meetings, presentations, conferences
  • posters, publications
  • funding applications
  • web presence
  • social media
  • etc.
  • TESTIMONIAL
    PROJECT: STRUCTURE OF A SPLICEOSOME
"What separates the work of N Molecular Systems from others is
solid knowledge coupled with ability to transform
deep and complex knowledge into vivid and clear visualization.

    Unique style/aesthetic in molecular visualization!"
